Thirty-four peope were injured last week in a series of accidents during rush hour along I-40 between Mebane and Hillsborough. The combination of sun and a blinding rainstorm made driving conditions virtually impossible. Traffic slowed to around 45 mph, but that couldn't prevent the mayhem.

According to herald-sun.com:

Eighty-two vehicles were involved in 44 collisions and 34 people were hurt, the Highway Patrol said. Most seriously injured was the driver of a minivan that crashed into the back of [a] bus.

The van's driver had to be cut from his vehicle using the "Jaws of life" and flown by helicopter to UNC Hospitals.

According to drivers involved in the accident, the sun was shining and the rainstom "came out of nowhere."
