Mayor of Walterboro Sustains Head Injury

The Mayor of Walterboro was involved in a golf cart accident on Monday at the Great Swamp Sanctuary. He suffered a head injury in the accident. He was giving a tour of the sanctuary at the time.

Officials say Sweat was outside of the golf cart Monday, bending over to remove a post, when the cart started to roll. Someone tried to stop the cart, but accidentally hit the gas, knocking Sweat over.

He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. He was listed in critical condition. The Great Swamp Sanctuary is thousands of acres of swampland that the mayor has worked on for years. It is located in Colleton County.

If you would like to learn more about head injuries, please visit InjuryBoard's Head Injury information page.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Child in Accident Suffers Brain Injury

A Northampton boy was struck by a car and suffered a brain injury on Wednesday afternoon. The 6-year-old boy is at a local hospital for multiple injuries. He was trying to cross a street when he was hit by the car.

Bob Johnson, the boy's uncle, said Luke also suffered two broken legs, a broken jaw, broken eye socket, punctured lung and a possible spinal injury. He said he underwent an operation to relieve the swelling on his brain.

After Luke was hit by the car, his heart stopped, but paramedics revived him, Johnson said.

At the time of the accident the boy was with an older brother. The police are still investigating the accident and no charges have been filed against the driver of the car at this time.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

A 14-year-old boy is recovering from a serious brain injury he received after he fell while riding a skateboard while hanging onto a car. This dangerous activity goes by the name of skitching.

Alex Hanson is recovering at Tampa General Hospital. He is a student at Charlotte High School. He was skitching at the 13000 block of Orchid Drive in Punta Gorda when he sustained the life threatening brain injury. He can now feed himself, speak a little, sit up and continues to improve.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Support the Traumatic Brain Injury Act of 2006

Tampa injury lawyer Bob Carroll, a fellow InjuryBoard blogger, brought my attention to a letter from Susan Connors, President of the Brain Injury Association of America. Susan asks readers to support the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Act of 2006 by contacting their representatives and asking them to become co-sponsors of the act. She also requests readers send the Congressional Brain Injury Task Force Appropriations Letter to Members of the House LHHS Appropriations Subcommittee.

Unfortunately, I am a little late to the ball on this as action needs to be taken today or tomorrow, so ACT NOW! Thank you.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer
