Firework Safety for the 4th of July

Officials are urging people to stay safe during the July 4th firework season. Fireworks can cause serious injury if not used properly. North Carolina allows the use of "safe and sane" fireworks.

"Safe and sane" generally means those that do not leave the ground, shoot projectiles into the air or explode. In the permitted category are amusements such as smoke balls, sparklers, toy trick noisemakers and sparkling fountains. If you want to be certain that your fireworks are legal, New Hanover County Fire Marshal Matt Davis recommends you buy them in North Carolina, not across the border. If you see them at your local grocery store, they most likely have been approved.

Sparklers are often played with by children but they burn at a very high temperature and can cause injury. Glow sticks are a fun and safe toy for children to play with instead.
