North Carolina Child Seriously Injured in Dog Attack

The Charlotte Observer is reporting a 6-year-old North Carolina boy was seriously injured on Wednesday after a Rottweiler bit him while his family visited a neighbor's house. The boy is recovering after hours of surgery at Northeast Medical Center in Concord, North Carolina.

Under North Carolina law the owner of a dog and possibly the owner of the property, where a dog is being boarded, can be liable for injuries caused by the animal. A common misconception is a dog gets "one free bite" before the owner can be held liable. Under North Carolina law the owner or boarder of a dangerous dog can be liable is the dog is of a breed that the owner should know exhibits dangerous or aggressive behavior. The Rottweiler breed would fall under this category. According to data issued from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), during the 1990s, Rottweilers replaced pit bulls as the deadliest dog in the United States, killing more than 33 persons between 1991 and 1998.

Baltimore Girl Attacked by Dog

A dog attacked a 9-year-old girl in East Baltimore on Tuesday. The victim is in the hospital where she is being treated for dog bites to her hands, arms, and shoulders. Her condition is unknown. The attack was by a pit-bull type dog.

The girl was attacked in the 800 block of Bonaparte Ave. shortly after 6 p.m. The dog wore no collar or tags that would identify it or its owner, Anderson said. When animal-control officer Travell Young arrived, he noted that the dog, a black male, "was not responsive and appeared to be injured," Anderson said. It also bore old bite marks.

The dog was captured and euthanized. They are running tests to see if the dog was infected with rabies. The owner of the dog has not come forward. The victim remains at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
