North Carolina Car Accident Highlights need Seat Belt Usage

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating an automobile accident this morning. The accident occurred on I-485 in Charlotte where 7 people were hospitalized with injuries including an infant. The Charlotte Observer reports all of the injured were ejected from the vehicle with the exception of the infant who was in a car seat.

This type of accident highlights the importance of wearing seatbelts to avoid the risk of death and serious personal injury. Published reports show people who are ejected form the vehicle are 25% more likely to be killed in an accident. In addition, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), lap-shoulder belt systems reduce the risk of fatality and serious injury by 50% for drivers and passengers. Despite efforts to publicize the need for seatbelt use millions of Americans take to the roads each day without wearing seat belts and the results can be catastrophic

High School Student Dies After Car Accident

A student from West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina died in a car accident on Mount Holly Road on Friday, March 21.

Alicia Davis, 17, was in the backseat of a Nissan 300zx, when the accident occurred. The driver, 20-year-old Jack Smith Jr., was trying to pass another vehicle when he lost control of the car and crossed into oncoming traffic. Once this occurred the Nissan slammed into an oncoming truck.

Smith was listed in critical condition Saturday morning. The driver of the truck, 49-year-old David Sutton, is listed in fair condition.

Speed Causes Cornelius North Carolina Car Accident

According to a police report released on Wednesday, speed was the primary contributing factor in a two vehicle car accident that killed two motorists and injured two others. The accident has received a lot of media attention because two sons of well known drag racer Doug Herbert were killed in the collision. The accident took place on Jetton Road in Cornelius just north of Charlotte, North Carolina. According to Cornelius Police, of 294 speeding citations issued 128 were given on Jetton Road.

According to the report Herbert's son, who was driving one of the vehicles, was traveling 80 mph in a 45 mph zone when he lost control of his Mazda and started spinning counterclockwise across four lanes of traffic. After traveling over 220 feet the Mazda slammed into a Hummer going the opposite direction on Jetton Road. The impact killed both occupants of the Mazda and sent the two occupants of the Hummer to the hospital with injuries.

The accident just highlights what many in law enforcement encounter everyday: Speed kills. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, over 41,000 individuals are killed in car crashes each year.

One Killed and Others Injured in North Carolina Car Accident

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, one passenger was killed and two others were seriously injured when a car lost control and veered off a North Carolina Interstate Sunday afternoon.

The car accident occurred on Interstate 77 North of Charlotte. One of the injured victims, Emily Peralta, 61, who was in intensive care at Carolinas Medical Center late Sunday while another injury victim, Gloria Bristol, 59, was in critical condition at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The driver of the vehicle Francisco Peralta, 70, is recovering with non-life threatening injuries.

Drunk Driver Kills Man in Rowan County

A drunk driver hit another car and killed a man and injured a child. The car accident happened in Rowan County on Thursday night. He was driving on Interstate 85 going in the wrong direction at the time of the accident.

Troopers say he got onto Interstate 85 at Lane Street in Cabarrus County around 11:30 p.m. Thursday and went the wrong direction. A vehicle going the correct direction swerved to miss Turner's car near exit 63 in Rowan County, and flipped into the median, troopers said.

The man continued to drive after the accident and was found 3 miles away from the scene of the accident. He has been charged with second-degree murder and driving while impaired. The victim was prounounced dead at the scene. The 4-year-old child in the victim's car was taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Wallace Car Accident Kills Two

Two people are dead and three children are injured after a car accident in Wallace this morning. The victims were from Wadesboro. Someone that lives near the crash scene said that many accidents happen at that intersection.

Just before 10:00 Thursday morning, Highway Patrol said the family's minivan collided with a flatbed truck at the intersection of Hwy 9 and 912 near Wallace.
Highway Patrol hasn't released the details of what happened. Deputies only said that their special accident investigation team is looking into the accident.

The driver of the truck was not hurt in the accident. Everyone was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The children are all expected to make a full recovery. The police are investigating the accident.

Charlotte Police Officer in Car Accident

A police officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was involved in a car accident in his cruiser today. He was driving to the scene of another car accident and was attempting to go through an intersection on a red light. The driver of the other car had a revoked license and was driving anyway.

Peterson said the officer was traveling on Central Avenue, headed to the accident scene, when he came to a red light at Eastway Drive. Peterson said witnesses later told police that the officer slowly edged his car forward into the intersection at about three to four mph.
The other vehicle was going between 45 and 50 mph through a green light and the two cars collided, Peterson said.

An internal investigation is being conducted as per department procedure. The driver of the other car was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and driving with a revoked license.

Annapolis Motorcycle Accident Kills Man

A 25-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday in Annapolis. The victim was from Edgewater. He was driving his motorcycle in a construction zone when the accident happened.

The victim

tried to merge left from a right-turn-only lane on southbound Route 2 near Forest Drive, swerved back to the right when he saw traffic approaching from behind, and went off the road, past the orange traffic cones and signs marking construction near the Annapolis Town Centre at Parole project, police said.

The victim came off his motorcycle and he died at a local hospital. The police are still investigating the accident and do not know the cause.

Person Killed in Charlotte Car Accident

A man was killed in a single car accident in Charlotte last week. He drove the car into a utility pole and then a building. Rescue teams had to use the Jaws of Life. The victim died at the scene of the accident.

It happened off of Old Concord Road in northeast Charlotte.
Investigators believe the driver of the car was driving too fast when he hit a sharp curve in the road. That caused the car to run off the road.

The passenger in the car was taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries. They were said to be life-threatening. The police are investigating the accident.
