A dump truck accident near the Lee-Charlotte County line on US 41 has left a man from North Port dead. The 81-year-old victim was driving his pickup truck southbound on US 41. The dump truck pulled out onto US 41 in front of him. The pickup truck slammed into the back of the dump truck at 55 mph.
Troopers shut down the highway while they investigated the accident. It happened just before 6:30 a.m. and the road re-opened just before 10 a.m.Preliminary reports show that the pick up wasn't speeding and had plenty of time to avoid the dump truck.

The police are investigating the accident. It is unknown why the victim did not get out of the way of the dump truck.
