A tanker truck carrying nitric acid overturned in Charlotte Tuesday morning. The trucking accident happened on University City Boulevard at Interstate 485.

Charlotte firefighters said the truck overturned on University City Boulevard after getting off of Interstate 485.

An off-duty Charlotte firefighter pulled the driver out to safety, and he was not badly hurt. The truck landed on its side on the shoulder, and was not leaking any of the chemical.

The road was closed for 12 hours as emergency teams worked to transfer the nitric acid to another truck and clean up the scene. The area was not evacuated and all of the nitric acid was contained.
