A truck driver claims the brakes on his coal hauler failed causing an accident that left coal over the road and hillside. The trucking accident happened in Wellsburg on Mechling Hill Road.

Rob McMahon, Brooke County director of emergency services, told the Brooke County Commission Tuesday part of the truck's load fell from the road and along the hillside above a reservoir many feet below.

McMahon said an official with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has advised it must be removed in the near future to prevent contamination.

He said specialized equipment will be needed to remove the material because of the hill's steep slope.

The driver had to jump from the cab of the truck before it drove into the side of a hill. The Sheriff's office is investigating the accident and no charges have been filed.
