Two Children Killed by Logging Truck

The driver of a logging truck ran a red light and broadsided a van containing one adult driver and four child passengers. The driver of the van had just picked the children up from school and was pulling out of the parking lot when it was hit. Two of the children were killed immediately. The driver and other children were airlifted to the hospital. The driver of the logging truck was charged with two counts of reckless homicide.

Reckless homicide carries up to 10 years in prison if a person is convicted.

It is defined as a death up to three years after a collision by a vehicle that is driven "in a reckless disregard for the safety of others."

The charge ranks "not at the top, not at the bottom" of seriousness of offenses, Barfield said.

The accident happened on March 26th near Lewisville Elementary School along S.C. 9. The victims were 7 and 9 years of age.
